Detox For the Breast Feeding Mommy

I don't mean to sound like I'm bragging, but, I had FLAWLESS skin while I was pregnant with Benny. And being that I was a "pizza face" in high school, that change meant more to me than words could describe. However, after giving birth and falling behind on my skin regimen, (as a result of getting into the groove of being a new mommy) my monthly breakouts returned. And they returned with a vengeance. After a few weeks of applying makeup only when necessary, the usage of a heaven sent purifying facial mask (#GiovanniD:tox), washing my face with a cleanser at least once a day (don't judge me) and remembering to drink lots of water, my skin is back to it's "mid-pregnancy glow". Now that I have it under control and my mind is able to think beyond diaper changes and feedings, I have been realizing my internal "system of things" haven't been functioning as they use to. For that reason, I want to do a full body detox. But that is easier said than done, when you're breast feeding.
"A detox diet is a great way to boost your liver and kidney function–the body’s natural detox agents. Most detox diets are too calorically restrictive for nursing women who need a minimum of 1,800 calories a day to maintain milk supply. If you’re breastfeeding you need solid foods to keep your energy elevated and to take care of your baby." Here are 10 foods that detox your body and cleanse your liver.

If your body needs to get the yuck out, add Brussels sprouts to your diet today. Brussels sprouts are high in sulfur, which helps to remove toxins from the blood. Eating a serving or two of Brussels sprouts daily will help sponge out toxins – whether they’re environmental or dietary. These little sprouts also boost glucosinolate, an antioxidant that forces the liver to release enzymes that block damage.

A fresh bulb of garlic. Don’t have any in your kitchen right now? You should. Here’s why…garlic is loaded with sulfur, a mineral that helps rid the body of toxins. Garlic has also been shown to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Garlic has been used in the treatment of high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, and bacteria-related illnesses. Keep in mind, heating destroys many of the beneficial properties of garlic. If you can't stomach raw garlic, you can find it in capsule form in most grocery of health food stores.

Carrots are rich in glutathione, a protein that helps detoxify the liver. In addition to the detox properties, carrots contain good amounts of vitamin C, B6 and potassium. They also loaded with vitamin A and K, too! It's best to eat these raw. I love to eat them raw and roasted. I'm kind of a one trick pony when it comes to how I roast my veggies. Peel the carrots and cut both vertically and horizontally (as pictured above). Toss the vegetables with a little olive oil or coconut oil (that would be nice). Season with kosher salt and black pepper and add slices of garlic. Roast for 25 to 30 minutes until tender and the edges begin to brown at 425ยบ. It's one delicious trick.

Raw tomatoes do a great job detoxifying the liver, containing 169 milligrams of glutathione per serving. The benefits don't stop there. Tomatoes are famous for their lycopene content, which has been shown to protect against breast, skin and lung cancer. Eat tomatoes when they're fresh. Try with a little balsamic vinegar and sea salt.

Popeye's favorite, spinach, contains a whopping 166 milligrams of glutathione per serving when eaten raw. Cook it, and it all goes away. Spinach also contains twice as much energy-boosting iron as other leafy greens. Spinach has also gained a lot of attention as a cancer-fighter, too. Throw 2 handfuls of spinach in a blender with your favorite fruits and enjoy a smoothie.

Walnuts detox the liver and feed the brain! A good source of glutathione and a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, a little bit of walnuts goes a long way. Why not sprinkle a few on a strawberry and spinach salad?

Avocados are another fruit rich in glutathione. This green goddess is also a good source of monounsaturated fats and has been shown to lower cholesterol levels when eaten regularly.

In addition to being great for the liver, asparagus is a great vegetable to eat raw when you're feeling bloated. Asparagus is a natural diuretic. I roast them just as I do the carrots.

]

Grapefruit contains just over 70 milligrams of liver cleansing glutathione. Grapefruits also contain a special kind of pectin that has been shown to lower cholesterol like no other pectin-containing food. One whole grapefruit is about 80 calories, so enjoy with a cup of cottage cheese or plain yogurt sprinkled with cinnamon and you've got a great breakfast.

5 Amazingly Beautiful Reasons to Breastfeed Your LO

My LO is now 2 weeks and 1 day old and although he's been in this world a short amount of time-I can't imagine my life without him. Who knew such a huge gift can be delivered in a tiny package. As a first time mom, bonding with him is super important to me-which is why I decided early that I would breastfeed. Although, at first, a bit painful, I have found many benefits to breastfeeding my Teddy Rumpskin. Here are 5 benefits to breastfeeding that definitely outweigh any fears and negative reasons not to.

1. It's The Best Nourishment

"Human milk provides the specific nutrients that babies need to grow both in size and maturity..." (THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING, 7th Revised Edition, page 340). A mother's milk contains tons of essential nutrients for baby's current and future health, including antibodies that help protect your LO against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), many childhood cancers and even a simple yet painful ear infection. [A study in the Philippines showed that, "Deaths from respiratory infections and diarrhea were eight to ten times higher in babies who were artificially fed than in those who were even partially breastfed for six months "] (THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING, 7th Revised Edition, page 350). Also, keep in mind, that artificial formulas are generally harsher on baby's sensitive digestive system.

2. You Create A Strong Bond With Your LO

I have to say the most rewarding part of breastfeeding Benny is the stare he gives me after he latches. It's a "loaded" stare that speaks volumes! I feel like he's saying "thank you" with every gulp. I love how his little hands sometimes find themselves half way past my breast as if he's trying to give me a hug. Delivering nourishment from my body, the warmth of my skin and hearing him try to balance his gulps with my flow are all beautiful components of the magic of breastfeeding. Not to mention the deep source of comfort and protection he feels. And the pride I feel in knowing that only I have the ability to connect and satisfy him in this way.

3. Helps You Lose Baby Weight Faster

I haven't started exercising yet, as I am still awaiting to regain the strength in my abdominal muscles. And for some reason, my cravings are worse than when I was pregnant (thank you hormones). But my weight loss has been steady. So far, I've lost 12 pounds and have already been able to fit my pre-baby jeans. How? Well, your body burns 500 calories to produce milk--hallelujer! With every gulp Benny takes, I feel my uterine contract and I make it a point to sit in a way that engages my abdominal muscles while feeding. Losing weight is not the only benefit to mommies. Breastfeeding is also linked to lowering the risk of a list of diseases such as: Type 2 Diabetes, breast and ovarian cancer as well as post partum depression. One of the most awesome benefits to breastfeeding, is, it postpones the return of the menstrual cycle.

4. It's Convenient

Carrying a diaper bag loaded with bottles and formula can be such a drag--an uncomfortable for some-small framed mommies. With items such as: diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, a changing pad and an extra receiving blanket--my diaper bag is very light and easy for travel. Late night feedings are such a breeze for me since I don't have to make a bottle. Wherever I go, my milk is always readily available--and fresh! Even if you work, you can pump your milk and store it in the freezer for your baby and it will last a long time, saving you a ton of money on formula.

5.  It's What Nature Intended

We are mammals and therefore designed to be able to feed our offspring through our own bodies. Humans are the most unique and awesome in this respect because it's a natural process, yet it's a choice we make. Sometimes it can be easy to give up with the frustrations that lactation brings. There's swelling, possible mastitis, failure to latch properly, milk supply issues and sore nipples. All of these factors however can be taken care of and are mostly all common to the first two weeks post delivery! Once baby has the hang of it, it's so easy and satisfying for both you and your LO.

I'm A Mommy!!!

Last week I was lucky enough to bring a beautiful and healthy baby boy into this world! After 7 hours of labor and 5 minutes of delivery I held 6 pounds 1 ounce Benjamin Carson Massillon in my arms in disbelief and in pure awe at the miracle I'd witnessed.  After a staring match, that I felt, took hours I realized I was really some one's mommy-Benny's mommy! Besides being his personal milk dispenser, I have spent these last days experiencing an indescribable love that I believe can only be given from a child. I find myself staring at him and incessantly praying for his future for hours. I worry about his well-being and methodically think about how I'm going to walk down the stairs with him. I guess this is what the job of being a mommy entails-a never ending cycle of worry and unconditional love.

Pregnancy Update: 35 Weeks

Hey guys I know it's been a minute since my last post but as you know, being preggo means being sleepy, achy, lazy which sometimes leads to pj day.  Lately, I've been wearing Juicy Couture velour pants in every color possible. I can't help it, they're comfortable and keeping  me warm in this cooling Fall weather.  I'm 35 weeks into my pregnancy and I can't control my emotions every time I think "I'm one day closer to meeting my little guy". I love feeling his rapid movements, his "shimmies" from side to side and his hiccups! My cravings have been rampant, and have me feeling like the chubby kid on the block for sure lol. I've been drinking a large amount of my home-made fruit smoothies- which my LO loves. As well as some not-so-healthy fast foods I dare not mention.

It's the week of my baby shower, so I've also been busy planning my menu as well as attacking many DIY projects to create my party favors. I'm going to share those photos on a separate post--but I did want to share this DIY baby wipes case I made today. The step-by-step tutorial can be found here.

Eva Marcille Pigford Maternity Wear Watch

Images by Try CW/WENN

Merely a week after announcing their pregnancy, Eva and Kevin were able to share their blessing and a few cliched hands on belly pictures with the world, when they arrived at The Reed For Hope Foundation's 11th Annual "Sunshine Beyond" Summer Celebration in Westlake Village this past weekend.  The couple glowed as they posed on the red carpet for the casual affair. Kevin kept it casual in a graphic tank top and cargo pants, while Eva fashionably mastered maternity wear in a care free white dress, nude-colored sun hat and a bevy of gold and white accessories.

The model admitted to People magazine that her pregnancy is "more than just a dream":

"It's bulls––––," Marcille said while lovingly rubbing her belly. "There is no glow! Your skin changes. It gets horrible. … My hair is already oily, so I don't need it to get any oilier, but it is. And I don't need it to grow faster. I like my hair short."

Luckily, she has a strong supporter in boyfriend and songwriter Kevin McCall who was quoted saying:

"Just being everything that I can be, and just making sure that I'm there at her beck and call whenever she needs me," he says. "If she needs popsicles in the middle of the night, then I'm going to 7-Eleven."
